Working for an Open-Source Company is Enjoyable

Year 2011 is going to end and lots of good things happened to me. In this post, I would like to make the results of this year and demonstrate why working for an Open-Source and open-minded company can make your life more enjoyable.

I was hired by Sensio Labs three years ago as a PHP developer and took the lead of the trainings department forteen months later. My actual job is very interesting in many points. It requests multiple technical, human and commercial skills mixed together. It makes my life enjoyable and rich of surprises.

Meeting people is one of the reasons I enjoy my job. I train lots of people to PHP, Symfony and other Open-Source technologies every month. Sharing my knowledge and experience on those technologies and best practices is a very exciting feeling. Passion drives all my trainings and it's one of the things my customers really like. Driving a training with passion really makes the difference and a pleasure for everyone.

Working for an Open Source company like Sensio Labs makes you travel a lot. This year I had the chance to travel in beautiful french cities and other awesome places in Europe, Africa, America and Asia. As a trainer and conference speaker, my company gives me the opportunity to travel around the world for almost free and that's why I really love my job.

In 2011, I trained my customers in the beautiful cities of Toulouse, Aix-en-Provence, Dijon or Strasbourg. I also had the chance to travel to Tunisia, Mali, Switzerland, Germany and Canada to meet and train my customers. Each training experience was very enjoyable for me and gave me the opportunity to open my mind and discover new traditions, food specialities...

Speaking at international conferences also gave me the opportunity to travel and meet interesting people. This year, I had the chance to speak at many international conferences listed below:

  • The Confoo conference in Montreal (Canada),
  • The Symfony Live conference in Paris (France),
  • The Paris Web conference in Paris (France),
  • The Symfony Day conference in Cologne (Germany),
  • The OSIDays conference in Bangalore (India),
  • The PHPTour conference in Lille (France),
  • and many small conference meetups in Paris and Los Angeles.

My agenda for 2012 already seems to go on the same direction as I will speak at the DDay Conference in Helsinki (Finland) and lead a Symfony workshop in Montreal for the new edition of the Confoo conference. I already submitted talks for the PHP UK conference in London and for the International PHP Conference in Berlin in which I hope I will be chosen to talk to.

Working for an Open Source company gives you lots of opportunities and exciting feeling. I really encourage people to join the Open Source philosophy to meet interesting people and travel around the world.
